BNY Mellon Investment Management has appointed Hanneke Smits as its new chief executive to replace 65-year-old Mitchell Harris when he retires in October.
Smits is currently the London-based chief executive of BNY Mellon subsidiary, Newton Investment Management, a job she has held since 2016.
She will join BNY Mellon’s executive committee but remain based in London.
“Mitchell has been instrumental in driving our investment management business over the last four years as CEO and we wish him all the best in retirement,” said Todd Gibbons, chief executive of BNY Mellon.
“During a period of tremendous change in the investment landscape, he helped reposition our multi-boutique model and launch new investment capabilities, leaving us well positioned to meet the evolving investment needs of our clients.”
A search is currently underway to find a new chief executive for Newton.
Following her promotion, Smits has resigned from the Bank of England’s Court of Directors with effect from end September.
