Stephan Leithner has been appointed as the chief executive of German exchange group Deutsche Börse.
His appointment will not be effective until October 1, after which Leithner will assume a co-CEO role alongside incumbent Theodor Weimer until the end of the year.
Leithner has served on the Deutsche Börse executive board since 2018 and was responsible for pre and post-trading.

He is also responsible for the investment management solutions arm of the exchanges group, which includes the ISS STOXX and SimCorp businesses as well as the post-trade operations of Cleartstream.
Before joining Deutsche Börse in 2018, Leithner was a partner at private equity firm EQT. Prior to that he worked at Deutsche Bank between 2000 and 2015.
Meanwhile current CEO Weimer is set to retire from the executive board at the end of the year after six years leading the organisation.

Martin Jetter, chairman of the supervisory board, paid tribute to Weimer’s time. “In 2018, Theodor Weimer was faced with the challenge of leading Deutsche Börse out of a period of deep uncertainty.
“He and his team have accomplished this challenge with brilliance. The annualised growth in net revenue and EBITDA of 13 per cent during his term speaks for itself.”
