UK sets out sustainable investing standard for “greener future”

The British Standards Institution (BSI), in conjunction with the government, has published a new specification to standardise responsible and sustainable investment management in the UK.

The programme seeks to address policies and processes needed to create and embed a responsible approach to investment management, and aims to transform the financial system for a “greener future”.

Its launch coincides with the UK preparing to assume the presidency of the G7, as well as host next year’s UN Climate Change Conference (COP26).

The specification, which sets out requirements to embed sustainability in the investment process, was delivered in collaboration with the country’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the financial services industry. It aims to support the UK’s green finance strategy.

Kwasi Kwarteng, minister of state for business, energy and clean growth, said: “Transforming our financial system for a greener future is crucial as we build back better from Covid-19 and to meet our legally binding target for net zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
