Globally listed thematic ETFs enjoy net inflows of $6.62bn in June

Thematic exchange-traded funds (ETF) listed globally gathered net inflows of $6.62 billion during June, reported research firm ETFGI.

According to its ‘June 2023 ETF and ETP Thematic industry landscape insights’ report, this brought year-to-date (YTD) net inflows to $19.11 billion – the fourth highest recorded since 2020.

Total assets invested in thematic ETFs globally increased by 18.3% year-to-date, growing from $221 billion at the end of 2022 to $261 billion at the end of June 2023

The rising interest can be attributed to the strong performance of the S&P 500, which increased by 6.61% in June and 16.89% year-to-date in 2023, said ETFGI.

Developed markets, excluding the US, also saw positive growth, rising by 4.46% in June and 11.07% year-to-date in 2023.

Emerging markets increased by 4.33% in June and 4.64% year-to-date in 2023, with Pakistan and Turkey showing the largest increases among emerging markets.

Since the launch of the first thematic ETFs in 2001 – the iShares North American Natural Resources ETF – the number and diversity of products have increased steadily, reported ETFGI.

At the end of June 2023, there were 1,449 thematic ETFs listed globally from 263 providers listed on 49 exchanges in 37 countries. During June, 31 new Thematic ETFs were listed.

The report attributed the substantial inflows to the top 20 ETFs/ETPs by net new assets, which collectively gathered $6.67 billion during June.

iShares Climate Conscious & Transition MSCI USA ETF (USCL US) gathered $2.17 billion, the largest individual net inflow.
