EU SFDR sparks shift towards sustainability in private funds

According to a recent Funds Europe Private Markets Admin Report, the EU’s Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) is significantly impacting private funds and their approach to sustainable investing.

Since its introduction in 2022, the SFDR has introduced new classifications to encourage transparency and sustainability in investment offerings.

The regulation categorises funds into three groups: Article 6 (funds without sustainability integration), Article 8 (funds with environmental or social commitments) and Article 9 (funds exclusively focusing on sustainable investment goals).

Data indicates a notable shift towards ESG compliance among funds, with 42.65% of total funds, valued at nearly $976 billion, recently adopting ESG measures.

However, a significant portion of funds, representing 36.88% with a TNAV of $1.25 trillion, have yet to align with SFDR criteria. Furthermore, the analysis shows Luxembourg leads in all SFDR categories, suggesting its prominent role in traditional and sustainable investment markets.

The report also highlights the challenges and opportunities of the transition to SFDR compliance, including the need for complex reporting and adapting to evolving ESG standards.
