Private debt has exhibited significant growth, amassing $1.5 trillion in assets under management (AUM), which constitutes just over 10% of all strategies, according to a new report.
Cerulli Associates’ most recent ‘Cerulli Edge—U.S. Asset and Wealth Management Edition’ report revealed private debt’s resilience, notably through the 2008 financial crisis. Moreover, this was evident through the economic repercussions of Covid-19 and fluctuations within the banking sector. On each occasion, private debt expanded, often outpacing traditional banking channels.
The report also indicates that the appeal of private debt extends beyond traditional corporate borrowers. Emerging sectors such as infrastructure, real estate, fintech and life sciences are increasingly turning to private debt.
While the U.S. dominates this market, there’s a burgeoning demand in Europe and Asia, all seeking adaptable debt solutions.
Institutional investors and high-net-worth (HNW) individuals are showing keen interest in private debt, said that report. Particularly, pensions and endowments are gravitating towards its consistent and relatively secure income streams, useful in offsetting potential deficits, noted Cerulli.
The report also notes a significant increase in accessibility for retail investors to private debt in 2022 via business development companies (BDCs), which surged to $210 billion.
Private debt’s yield stability, primarily due to its contractual obligations and precedence in financial hierarchies, is highlighted in the report. This predictable nature is causing a shift, with more asset owners considering fixed-income alternatives that merge safety with returns.
However, the report points out potential challenges. Private debt’s dependency on M&A financing and private-equity-sponsored deals introduce vulnerabilities, especially with economic shifts like rising interest rates.
Moreover, as private debt’s footprint grows, so does the scrutiny from regulatory entities, even if its inherent structure lessens some traditional banking risks.
