BMO Global Asset Management has launched an ESG-oriented fund targeting the China A-shares equity market.
Managed by June Lui, the strategy targets Chinese stocks with strong corporate governance and management of social and environmental issues.
According to the asset manager the strategy seeks to invest in businesses that “help address sustainability challenges in China that are prevalent across the developing world”.
BMO GAM said that better management of ESG [environmental, social and governance] issues will be encouraged through engagement and voting.
Lui said: “In recognising the governance issues in the onshore market, we believe these can be addressed by ensuring ESG factors are a focal point in the decision making process.”
Through this process, the BMO GAM aims to take advantage of trends stemming from urbanisation, income growth and technology advancement.
Other key themes at the core of the strategy include: health and wellbeing; food and nutrition; and energy transition.
