Assets invested in thematic ETFs and similar exchange-traded products (ETPs) reached a new high globally in May.
By the end of the month, there was a total $414 billion (€349.4 billion) invested in ETFs and ETPs following net inflows of $1.57 billion, according to the latest data from ETFGI.
The inflows were attributed to the top 20 ETFs and ETPs by net assets, which collectively gathered $5.82 billion by the end of May.
Meanwhile, year-to-date inflows were at nearly $60 billion by the end of May, surpassing the prior record of $45.62 billion set last year during the same period, ETFGI said.
The first thematic ETF, the iShares North American Natural Resources ETF, was listed in 2001, ETFGI said. Globally there now are 758 thematic ETFs and ETPs from 195 providers, according to the firm.
In 2020, European thematic ETFs were said to be among the “big winners” of 2020 as their assets under management almost trebled despite ongoing market turbulence.
Record inflows into the investment vehicle of net €9.5 billion was largely due to the “eye-catching” returns thematic ETFs in Europe have been generating, a report by Morningstar said.
