Three-quarters of hedge funds made positive returns in 2017

Three quarters of hedge funds produced positive returns for 2017 with the average return from positively-performing products nearing 10%, according to the eVestment Hedge Fund Performance Report for August.

India funds saw “exceptional” year-to-date returns at 22.77%. Overall the industry returned 0.74% in August bringing year-to-date performance to 5.47%.

Emerging markets hedge funds continued their winning streak in summer, as Brazil-focused funds took the lead in August with a 5.34% rise in performance, bringing year-to-date performance up 16.88%.

China-focused funds have been the top performers so far in 2017, returning 23.02% so far.

Aggregate returns from activists went into negative territory at 0.02% in August, but the universe remains among the best performing non-emerging market strategy in 2017 at 6.63%.

Managed futures’ returns continued to rebound in August at 1.22%, but year-to-date performance was just 0.76%.
