MSCI appoints ESG and real estate head

MSCI has promoted Remy Briand, currently global head of research, to lead the firm’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) and real estate product lines.

Briand will continue to report to Baer Pettit, chief operating officer, in his expanded role.

In addition to his additional product responsibilities, Briand will continue to head a team of about 150 researchers involved in product design for institutional investors. He will also be responsible for research across all MSCI products, including indices, risk models and ESG ratings.

In 2010, Briand led the restructuring of the firm’s ESG businesses after it was acquired from RiskMetrics. As head of index research from 2007 to 2014, Briand assisted in the creation of frontier market, minimum volatility and factor indexes.

Prior to joining MSCI in 2001, Briand was an equity portfolio manager and head of research at Credit Lyonnais Asset Management in Paris.
