Star performers Egypt, Greece and Ireland

Only six of the 20 S&P Dow Jones emerging markets posted gains in May, led by Egypt.

Although emerging markets lost 2.56% collectively in May, troubled Egypt was the star performer with 4.19%.

Developed markets were down 0.16% in May, but down 2.61% excluding the US. Meanwhile, Greece and Ireland posted the best returns with 3.67% and 2.66%, respectively.

Gains in the US skewed numbers, S&P Dow Jones Indices says, as it gained 2.15% in May and 14.64% year-to-date.

May continued and increased April’s and March’s performance gap between emerging and developed markets. Year-to-date, emerging markets posted gains of 2.39% and developed markets 10.02%.
