Institutions hunt US small caps

The recent revival in stock markets boosted US small cap performance, said Brown Advisory, a Baltimore-based fund manager with $29 billion (€22 billion) under management.

The firm said that since the conclusion of the financial crisis, the asset class has been powered by central bank easing, improving economic conditions and fairly robust M&A activity.

Christopher Berrier, co-portfolio manager, said:“We are seeing a substantial pick-up in interest in small cap stocks amongst institutional investors who believe the asset class will continue to benefit from improving economic data in the US and global coordinated central bank easing.

Brown Advisory’s US Smaller Companies Fund has risen by more than 29% over the last six months.
