Investment manager Vanguard has made changes to its leadership team, with John James, managing director-Vanguard Australia, taking over responsibility for the firm’s UK and European operations.
In his new role James will report directly to James M Norris, managing director, Vanguard International, and will assume responsibility for management, distribution, and operations in the UK and Europe. Vanguard’s European operations now have more than $90 billion in assets under management.
James joined Vanguard at its US headquarters in 2008 as head of broker-dealer sales and distribution, and then moved to the international division to lead a strategic review of the group’s non-US business and distribution. In 2010, he returned to Australia to lead Vanguard’s Australian operations.
Prior to joining Vanguard, James was the chief executive officer of Australian Football League team Port Adelaide for four years. He gained executive leadership experience with a number of Australian financial services companies, such as MLC, the wealth management division of the National Australia Bank. He also serves as a director of the Financial Services Council.
James replaces Thomas M Rampulla, who held the position for seven years and will now return to the US to head Vanguard’s $1 trillion Financial Advisor Services division. Rampulla will join Vanguard’s senior executive team and report directly to Vanguard chief executive officer, Bill McNabb.
In Australia, James will be replaced by Colin Kelton, previously principal of Vanguard’s retail marketing & communications group in the United States. Kelton assumes responsibility for all aspects of management, distribution, and operations of Vanguard’s Australian business.
