SPDR creates COO role

State Street’s exchange-traded fund (ETF) business, SPDR, has created a chief operating officer in London and appointed Malcolm Smith to the position.

Smith becomes global SPDR chief operating officer and reports to Rory Tobin, co-head of global SPDR business, which has $452 billion in assets under management.

Smith will be responsible for leading, managing and developing the operational infrastructure for the SPDR business globally. 

Prior to this appointment Smith was interim global chief operating officer in the global investments and solutions division at Barclays Wealth and Investment Management.

Smith served in previous roles as global chief operating officer for M&G Real Estate and European chief operating officer of Barclays Global Investors, where he helped establish and manage iShares, the European ETF business of BlackRock.

Earlier in his career Smith worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
