Martin Currie hires Japan long/short equity team

TeamEdinburgh-based active equity firm Martin Currie has bought an investment team from London-based long/short Japan equity boutique, PK Investment Management.

Paul Kirkby leads the team and Martin Currie’s incumbent manager, Claire Marwick, will also join it.

The firm also bought the team’s assets, increasing Martin Currie’s Japan Long/Short strategy assets under management to $425 million (€394 million).

Kirkby has also been appointed lead manager of the Legg Mason Japan Absolute Alpha Fund, a Ucits fund domiciled in Luxembourg. Legg Mason acquired Martin Currie in 2014.

“Paul has over 30 years’ experience in managing Japanese equities and is backed by a proven team who together have combined experience of the Japanese market in excess of 97 years,” said Andy Sowerby, head of sales and marketing at Martin Currie.
