HSBC Asset Management has hired a climate technology team as part of its strategy to develop its investment capabilities in alternatives.
The team will develop a venture capital investment strategy targeting global startups addressing climate change challenges, focusing on areas such as energy, transportation, agriculture, and supply chains.
The first fund is planned to be launched before the end of the year with a “cornerstone” investment from HSBC.
Christophe Defert has been appointed as head of climate technology investments. Prior to joining HSBC AM, Centrica spent 10 years at energy multinational Centrica.
Defert has over 16 years experience in investment banking, private equity, energy contracts and more.
He is joined by Michael D’Aurizio, who joins as investment director, climate technology, and brings over 10 years’ experience in power, utilities, and clean energy.
The team reports to Remi Bourette, head of venture and growth investments, who joined the firm last year from HSBC Global Banking and Markets.
