First State appoints UK MD

First State Investments has hired Gary Cotton as UK managing director, taking over from Chris Turpin, who was appointed to global director of corporate development earlier this year.

Based in London, Cotton reports to Turpin, who is also regional managing director for Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

Cotton will be responsible for the day-to-day management of First State’s business in the UK and is also set to join the company’s board in the country.

At M&G Investments, where he spent the last 23 years, Cotton was most recently chief operating officer of M&G Limited.

Other roles he held at M&G include COO of M&G Investment Management, chief executive of equities, and head of business management, equities.
