Growth in assets in the global hedge fund industry lags significantly behind the exchange-traded product (ETP) sector.
Assets invested in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and ETPs worldwide surpassed the hedge fund industry by $2.54 trillion (€2.3 trillion) at the end of the third quarter of this year.
Whilst the hedge fund industry suffered net outflows of $6.8 billion throughout the quarter, ETFs and ETPs saw inflows to the tune of $140.8 billion, the latest data from research firm ETFGI shows.
According to the analysis, $5.78 trillion were invested in nearly 8,000 ETFs and ETPs listed globally as of the end of September – the highest figure yet – representing a growth in assets of 2.52% over the quarter.
During the same period, assets invested in global hedge funds shrunk by 0.17% to $3.24 trillion in 8,242 hedge funds, according to a separate report by Hedge Fund Research (HFR).
