Emerging markets and Asian hedge funds surged in the second quarter this year, recovering from the steep losses seen at the end of the first quarter.
According to a report by Hedge Fund Research, its China index gained 6.8% in July alone bringing the total increase for the quarter to 14.5%.
The HFRI Emerging Markets (Total) Index also advanced +12.8 percent in 2Q. This was the strongest quarterly gain since the final quarter of 2001.
Hedge fund capital invested in emerging markets also surged concurrent with the record performance gains, ending 2Q at $244.4 billion (€2.06 billion), the report stated.
HFR president Kenneth J. Heinz said: “Emerging markets hedge funds have navigated the pandemic volatility in recent months, with gains across regional equities, currencies and commodities narrowing or entirely offsetting early 2020 losses as the coronavirus pandemic was beginning its impact on the global economy.”
