2016 saw new all-time high for ETF assets

Latest figures for assets under management (AUM) in ETFs in Europe show the industry reached a new all-time high of €514.5 billion in 2016.

The figure means ETF assets increased from €449 the year before.

Figures from Thomson Reuters Lipper show that bonds was the category with the highest net sales in Europe over the year, with €19.1 billion of inflows.

Flows for the two other main asset classes were:

  • Equities €15.5 billion (69% of total assets)
  • Commodities € 2.6 billion (3% of total assets)

However, equity US was the group with the highest assets under management, reaching €82.1 billion at the end of the year.

BlackRock’s iShares ETF business saw the highest net sales of €26.6 billion, followed by Vanguard Group with €4.3 billion and SPDR, which is part of State Street, with €4.2 billion.

The ten best selling funds gathered total net inflows of nearly €20 billion for 2016.

The iShares Core S&P 500 Ucits ETF USD (Acc) was the largest, with €18.3 billion in assets under management, and the best selling, with €4.11 billion of net flow.
