Funds Europe, in association with Calastone, sought to identify the main trends affecting the evolution of fund distribution. Among the findings:
• 42% of respondents believe robo-advisers will become the main distribution channel for raising assets from the mass retail market
• 57% believe passive funds will take over from actively managed funds as the core investment product for mass retail customers, compared with 30% who believe the same for sophisticated investors
• 51% believe asset managers are bad at making use of data about their distribution network and 21% believe asset managers are good at adopting new technology
• Technology companies such as Google and Microsoft are believed to have the greatest potential to disrupt asset management business models
• Direct-to-consumer models are expected to be the most important distribution channels in ten years’ time
A total of 263 people took part in the online survey.
