Neuberger Berman expands Ucits liquid alternatives

Liquid alternativesInvestment manager Neuberger Berman has extended its liquid alternatives Ucits platform with the launch of the Neuberger Berman Global Long Short Equity Fund.

The fund’s investment team is led by Daniel Geber and includes analysts Thuy Tran and Alan Freeman. The team will employ an active, unconstrained strategy that uses macro and fundamental stock analysis to build a global equity portfolio.

The fund is registered for sale in the UK and will have the flexibility to take long and short positions. It is a sub-fund of the Irish-domiciled Neuberger Berman Investment Funds.

Data from research group Strategic Insight suggests that among Ucits funds, the liquid alternatives asset class has expanded from around $70 billion (€66 billion) under management at the end of 2008 to approximately $200 billion today.

Fred Ingham, head of international hedge fund investments for Neuberger Berman, says: “Investors are concerned by a run-up in equity valuations in a world still beset by economic difficulties, but cannot see a way to achieve sufficient returns from fixed income portfolios with low absolute yields and threatened by the spectre of interest rate risk in the US and UK.”

Neuberger Berman managed $250 billion in client assets as of December 31, 2014, including alternatives portfolios of over $28 billion.
