Smart beta ETF assets near €500bn

Investments in ‘smart beta’ equity ETFs and other exchange-traded products (ETPs) were nearing $500 billion globally at the end of 2016.

Recent figures from ETFGI, a research and consultancy firm, showed there were $497 billion (€469 billion) of assets under management in these products at the end of November 2016.

The industry’s 1,179 smart beta equity ETPs from 145 providers had increased their assets by 18.1% in aggregate in the year to the end of November.

iShares, Vanguard and Charles Schwab Investment Management gathered the highest smart beta flows, which in total for the industry were $47.1 billion at year-to-date November 30, ETFGI said.

The amount of money in active ETFs also increased last year. ETFGI figures showed that assets invested in these products globally reached “a new record” of $42 billion at the end of November.

Total ETF and ETP assets globally stood at $3.445 trillion.
