Assets invested in smart beta equity exchange-traded products (ETPs) increased by 18.3% globally in the first eight months of 2017.
ETFGI, an ETF consultancy and data house, said assets under management in these funds totalled US$630 billion (€526 billion) at the end of August.
During the month, smart beta equity ETPs gathered net inflows of $3.23 billion – the 18th consecutive month of net inflows. For the year so far, these funds had gathered $48.86 billion compared with $33.77 billion at the same point last year.
There were 1,279 smart beta equity ETFs/ETPs in existence, said ETFGI.
iShares gathered the largest smart beta ETF/ETP net inflows during the month with $1.66 billion, followed by DeltaShares with $793 million and Vanguard with $707 million.
Products tracking MSCI smart beta indices gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows, followed by CRSP and FTSE Russell.
