GSAM hires ESG specialist for fixed income team

Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) has appointed Niamh Whooley – Pimco’s former environmental, social and governance (ESG) head – to its fixed income team.

In this newly-created role, Whooley will work with the London-headquartered firm’s corporate research analysts and “help foster improved engagement” on ESG-related themes across its investments. She will be based in London and has no official job title as yet.

Iain Lindsay, co-head of global portfolio management within the global fixed income team, said: “We are in constant dialogue with our clients on ESG and, as a firm, already coordinate our capabilities across asset classes.”

According to the fund manager, the appointment is designed to strengthen its ESG capabilities.

Prior to joining GSAM, Whooley was part of Pimco’s ESG executive leadership committee head of its ESG desk. Before that, she was director of ESG equity research at Societe Generale.

Whooley has also participated in industry wide ESG initiatives, such as the UN Principles for Responsible Investment’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) advisory committee and bondholder engagement working group.
