Funds grew worldwide in last quarter of 2017

Worldwide investment fund assets increased 2.3% in the fourth quarter of 2017 to €44.3 trillion, according to figures published today by the European Fund and Asset Management Association (Efama).

Other significant data during the last quarter of 2017 according to Efama’s International Statistical Release include the fact that:

    •  Worldwide net cash inflows totalled €635 billion, down from €694 billion in the third quarter;

    •  Long-term funds (excluding money market funds) recorded net sales of €523 billion, up from €430 billion in the third quarter of 2017;

    •  Net sales of equity funds jumped to €245 billion, from €121 billion in the previous quarter;

    •  Net sales of bond funds fell to €138 billion, from €193 billion in the previous quarter;

    •  Net sales of balanced/mixed funds increased to €112 billion, from €65 billion in the third quarter;

    •  Money market funds registered net sales of €112 billion, down from €264 billion in the third quarter;

    • At the end of 2017, the asset share of equity funds represented 42% and the asset share of bond funds was 21%.  Balanced/mixed funds represented 18% of the worldwide total, whereas the asset share of money market funds was 11%;

The market share of the ten largest countries/regions in the world market were the United States (45.9%), Europe (34.2%), Australia (4.0%), Brazil (3.6%), Japan (3.3%), Canada (3.2%), China (3.2%), Rep. of Korea (0.9%), India (0.6%) and South Africa (0.4%). 

Five European countries ranked among the top ten largest fund domiciles: Luxembourg (9.4%), Ireland (5.4%), Germany (4.6%), France (4.4%) and the United Kingdom (3.7%).
