Infrastructure twist for shipping fund

Archipelago Investment and Red7Marine have launched a fund investing in specialist vessels and equipment used in offshore infrastructure, marine engineering and drilling.

The Marine Opportunities Fund I aims to capitalise on the growth in the oil and gas, renewable energy, mining and other emerging economy sectors.

Its managers seek to acquire vessels and lease them to companies requiring these services. Such buyers are, for example, oil and gas companies, offshore mining and renewable firms and marine engineering companies worldwide.

“We see Marine Opportunities Fund as an infrastructure fund, rather than a typical shipping fund,” Martin Spurr, group chairman of Red7Marine, said. “Essentially the fund is filling a specialist demand gap in some of the world’s largest markets.”

Risk will be managed by diversifying across asset types – vessels, jack-ups and equipment.
